Sally’s Health Tips

Hot sunny weather gets us outdoors and this is great for us in so many ways!  We are getting more active and absorbing valuable vitamin D from the sun, just to name a few.

Please remember there are also hazards to over-exposure to direct sunlight.  It just takes a little planning ahead to protect yourself. Wearing a hat, preferably one with a brim, or a bandanna, will protect your scalp and face from some of the harmful rays and help prevent sunstroke.  Umbrellas provide shade and work well at the beach or on the patio.

We all know we should use sunblock if staying outdoors for extended periods of time in direct sunlight, especially if it’s between 10 am to 2 pm.  If you are fair skinned, it’s advised at all times.

And, last but not least, remember to stay sufficiently hydrated!  Water is your best and cheapest choice!  Try to drink 8 glasses per day, whenever possible.  A simple way to achieve this is by having a glass before and after each meal, including your afternoon or morning snack.  If you are not keen on the taste of water, try adding a slice of lemon, lime or cucumber to your water!

Interesting FACT about WATER:   The number ONE cause of afternoon fatigue in North America, is dehydration!

So, the next time you feel tired mid-afternoon, instead of reaching for a coffee, pop or chocolate bar, why not try ‘good old water’ first.  You will most likely feel revitalized in just a few minutes!
